North East LA grew up around the yellow line of the Los Angeles Railway. For a long time, it was primarily home to Hispanic communities. However, as the cost of living rose in LA, gentrification began to expand east. Now, NELA is a balancing act of new development mixed with long-time residents.
The homes in NELA are more compact than many of its neighboring towns to the east. Here, you’ll find single-family homes set on smaller lots and condos in bustling areas. However, while they may not be as spacious, buying a home in North East LA is worth it for the walkability, access to arts and dining, and the tight-knit community feel.

All summer long, Occidental College hosts a concert series, and Street Food Cinema puts on movies in the park (accompanied by some of the best food trucks LA has to offer).
Moon Canyon Park is a wonderful place to go hiking through the untouched natural beauty of NELA. At Heritage Square Museum, visitors can experience what life was like in 19th Century Los Angeles. On the border of NELA and East LA is Griffith Park, with miles of hikes and parks, as well as the Old LA Zoo, where the Independent Shakespeare Company hosts the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival.
